Learning Practical Shorthand?

The idea of a Workbook for Practical Shorthand writing is purely innovative based on the concept of learning a Practical subject. The idea had crept in my mind a decade ago when I got the first-ever Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Stenography in the world. I wrote a Chapter on Applied Linguistsics (Practical Stenography) in my Ph.D. Thesis on my experiments of teaching Stenography to four beginners who were able to pass speed tests of 80-120 w.p.m. in 4-6 months' training period. Encouraged by these successes

three were able to achieve 230 to 250 w.p.m. and became Parliamentary Reporters in both Houses of Parliament in the shortest possible time. One cannot understand how and why it becomes very difficult or a lifetime ambition for thousands to qualify the speed of 120 w.p.m.?

I realised that the largest number of drop-outs in Stenography learning was due to many factors related to teaching and understanding of the subject as a language science. The teachers of Shorthand blame the students for poor knowledge of language though its learning is complimentary and supplementary to language acquisition. Many regard it as a boring subject merely because of lack of understanding. Many others think it a very difficult subject compared to other subjects (based on easy learning by Question/Answer books). Some learners leave Shorthand within weeks, some discontinue it in the middle, while some leave it even after completing the course. Some reach their minimum target and feel tired and discouraged to increase speed and go ahead. Only a small percentage of enthusiastic learners achieve their goal who are frank in asking questions or expressing difficulty in understanding the illogical or inexplicit rules from the Teacher. Majority of the students write wrong outlines from the beginning because of lack of proper instructions in the book they are taught.

They appreciated the idea of a Practical Workbook and admitted that it will be of great help not only for the students but also for the teachers to lessen their burden of teaching in the beginning when individual attention has to be paid towards each student, particularly the weaker students. It will give a new impetus in learning of Shorthand with confidence and competence, without which its learning is meaningless.

The Workbook has been planned, designed and computerised in a systematic way of learning as a subject of Linguistics and fully caters to the needs of every learner whichever book is adopted for learning. The Workbook is divided into four Parts. Part I gives instructional guidance on the geometrical designs (alphabets) of Shorthand and proceedes Chapter-wise on the latest Syllabus adopted by the NCERT / CBSE / DGET / NOS. It has 70 Exercises for Practice and Test to judge the progress of learners on knowledge, understanding & Practical Application (skill).

Part II contains Dictation & Reading Exercises on Speed Writing Chapters after the completion of the Basic Theory. With these the students will be able to write simple letter-dictations with a speed of 60 w.p.m. and transcribe them.

Part III contains detailed study of Correspondence giving Dictation & Test Exercises of Simple Business letters in the two formats (styles) adopted by business organisations.

Part IV gives Practice and Test Exercises on all types of Official Correspondence. Part III & Part IV (Business & Official Correspondence) are now part of the Syllabus covering 50% marks on which no book is available for Shorthand Writers. Instructions for accurate Transcription and Correction of Errors have been given after Test Exercises.

I hope after the success achieved by the author's Simple Shorthand series of books, this Workbook will be of immense help and guide to students, self-learners as well as enthusiastic teachers and will prove another milestone of progress in the innovative work of the Author in this field.
